The Islam that Saadawi and Mernissi describe is the one that Leila Ahmed calls “women’s Islam,” a spoken Islam different from the “official textual Islam” from which men claim their authority. Ahmed explains,

there are two quite different Islams, an Islam that is in some sense a woman’s Islam and an official, textual Islam, a “men’s” Islam. And indeed it is obvious that a far greater gulf must separate men’s and women’s ways of knowing, and the different ways in which men and women understand religion, in the segregated societies of the Middle East than in other societies.[36]
